1. Ownership documents

If the seller is a middleman, ask to see the documents of the original owner. You do not want to find out that the horse you bought was stolen.

2. Health
Observe the horse at close range, does it look healthy? When you are sure of the horse that you want to buy, ask a vet officer to come and help you inspect it. A vet can help you detect diseases that may not be manifested with symptoms on the outside. Find out from the current owner which vaccines the horse has received in the past. If a horse suffered from recurring diseases in the past, you might want to think twice about buying it. Will you be ready to pay for the cost of medication every time the diseases recurs?

3. Behavior
If you already have other horses, find out about the behavior of the new horse when it is among other horses. What about its reaction to the handler, does is keep kicking when it is feeding time? Look for signs of aggressive behavior when your handler is with the horse. Climb the saddle and ride the horse for a few laps, how does it feel? You do not want a horse that will not even let you get on the saddle after you have bought it.

4. Type of breed
Consider the horse breed that you want to buy. Some breeds like Friesian are known for their agility, strength and stronger immunity to many diseases. If you are looking for a racing horse, look for one that has already been trained or that can be easily trained. Also, consider whether you will need special feeds for the horses.
